Bone Island 2024
This is your friendly reminder to check your passport before you go any further. We want you to be on one of our next trips out of country and our country doesn't want to expedite your passport!
Now...let's slip on a little music and talk about our trip, Bone Island, where we were able to experience the Berry Islands with the amazing crew at Soul Fly Lodge.
White sand, big bones, cold drinks, tasty food, clean water, and picky permit. Mix in a great group of guys and it is hard to go wrong. There is a reason that fishing the Bahamas makes its way onto almost every anglers bucket list. The island culture and scenery is enough to make you adjust your annual budget in order to make a yearly pilgrimage to the sight fishing motherlands.
If you want to read more about the allure of the Bahamas, check out the book we provided everyone for the trip, Body of Water.
This was a four night, three day trip. Although everyone was in agreement that we wished we could stay longer, there is a place for shorter trips (especially around the holidays). A few of us pitched the idea of faking our own deaths or "losing our passports" in order to extend the day, but we couldn't come to an agreement as a group so we had to come back. SOME people had over 100+ emails to respond to and responsibilities at home/work (You know who you are).
We flew in from Ft. Lauderdale via Makers Air. Flying private allowed us to get there in roughly an hour and bypass the circus of the Miami Airport and standing in line for several hours in Nassua. Scientists have proven that for every hour you spend with TSA takes 1.5 years of expectancy comes off your life.
Once we got to Great Harbour Cay, we were picked up by Soul Fly's people hauler, a Dodge truck rigged out with rod holders and benches that lined the truck bed. We kicked off the trip with the first of many "cheers" enjoying an ice cold Kalik. Soul Fly has a full bar so we were able to try lots of other concoctions, including a drink called "Rob's Mom," but after a long day on the water spooking fish, there is nothing more refreshing than an ice cold bahamian beer.
Despite a cold front that was big enough to impact our crew at the Pelican Chandeleur (Learn about their trip HERE), we were able to be in fish the entire trip. The weather had them a little more picky than normal, but we were still able to scratch some nice Berry Island Bones out, and Chris and I even managed to blow some shots on Permit. I think I might be getting the bug...
Everyone LOVED the guide team. Throughout the trip we all moved around with who we fished with and were able to learn little things from each guide. Percy Darville shared stories, and Travis Sands warmed us up with his larger-than-life personality. Every person on the trip had their own preferences, and it was fun to mix things up and allow people to get to know one another.
The food...the food was AMAZING. We enjoyed local food mixed with a flare of fun fusion. From conch salad, to cajun shrimp, all the way to blueberry jerk porkchops...we had some incredible dishes from the lodge. Food will also be a priority for Drifter trips...I guess it was just the principle my father instilled in me to "control what you can control." As far as I know, we can't control cold fronts (that discussion was had over a few drinks), but we can control the food, the fun, the education, and activities.
All and all...we had an amzing trip. The best part truly was the group of guys who came together. We shared laughs, life advice, and plenty of stories. If you ever need to know which guides NOT to go with...talk with Michael Craine. If you ever need a leg model for a photo shoot, talk with Joe Espich. If you are ever in the market for an RV, talk with Dave Duncaan. In my opinion, the relationships are the biggest proirity...and it is cool to see bonds built that will live well beyond the Bahamian borders. THAT is what Drifter is all about.
I am excited to check out East End Lodge this June! If you have the "bahama blues" from missing out on this trip, make sure to grab a spot for our week long stay in the Grand Bahamas! Just shoot us an email for more info.
